Kayak Lessons
Looking for fun days out in Devon? Learn how to kayak with ABC Watersports! We’ll share our knowledge and passion with you for this fun and highly rewarding sport.
All ABC Watersports staff are registered members of British Canoeing, the National Governing Body for paddlesports. Each staff member is trained to (and very often above) the standard required by British Canoeing to provide these activities and this includes a 16 hour first aid qualification. ABC Watersports staff carry the necessary first aid and safety equipment with them at all times.
We offer 3 levels of kayak lessons. Read on for further info on each one.
Each session lasts 2 ½ hours.
We understand that taking up a new hobby requires a fair amount of commitment, so you may want to ‘try before you buy’. Our Intro to Kayaking sessions allow you to do just that! We’ll run through the different types of kayaks available and the kit you’ll need, while answering any questions you may have.
Then we’ll get you on the water and show you how to manoeuvre your kayak effectively, covering forward paddling, stopping, turning and bracing. We’ll also show you how to get onto the kayak from deep water (known as a ‘self-rescue’).
Essentially these sessions are kayaking lessons for beginners but with the aim of making you self-sufficient, with the additional knowledge of boats and kit.
Each session is 2 ½ hours long and will be both land and water based.
Kit Provided:
For those with their own board & kit
Intermediate kayak lessons are for those who have already started paddling but want to improve on technique and gain confidence. Pushing your kayaking skills further can be a fun and rewarding process
We will work on honing your forward paddling skills and look deeper into the power transfer from your blade, through your body and to your boat. We’ll also test your steering and turning manoeuvres and demonstrate rescue methods that you can use to help yourself and your friends.
We aim to raise your skill level and enhance your confidence but above all make sure you’re having fun!
For those with their own board & kit
Advanced kayak lessons will involve learning how to handle your kayak in challenging conditions, including moderate wind and flow. With the right knowledge and skills you can embrace these conditions and have a lot of fun.
These lessons are for those who are looking to take their kayaking skills to the next level. With a little bit of dedication, there are no limits with how far you can take your kayaking skills.
